What You Need to Know

  • Testing is FREE.

  • Testing is conducted through a self-collected shallow nasal swab (anterior nares).

  • Wear a mask to the testing site.Ages 2 and up are required to wear a mask.
  • Individuals should not sign up if they:

    • Have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days
    • Are currently isolating or quarantining due to their contact with a known positive case
    • Are feeling sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Most MAP test results are returned within 48 hours. But all results are sent within four business days of the test.

  • Parents or legal guardians may register minors who are at least 3 years of age and under age 15 to be tested. Community members between the age of 15 and 18 may register themselves and attend the testing event without a guardian. If you are registering yourself and one or more minor(s) in your care, you must complete this form once for each person receiving a test. You must accompany the minor(s) you register to the testing event. We encourage self-collection in children who are able, however minors under the age of 10 may need your help to collect their sample. Test results will be released to the guardian registering the minor for testing; we will not contact the minor directly.

  • Winter weather may impact testing operations, up to and including cancellation of your testing appointment. If we need to cancel your COVID-19 test due to weather, we will inform you via text and email at the contact information you provided during registration. To remain informed of UO campus status during winter weather, please visit the UO Alerts Page for more information.

Why Get Tested

  • Many people are asymptomatic carriers of the virus. If you are asymptomatic, you can prevent further spread of the virus to your family, friends, and others in the community by identifying the virus, isolating, and cooperating with contact tracers.

  • Participating in MAP testing helps the UO develop strategies that local officials and university leaders can enact to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

What to Expect at Your MAP COVID-19 Test

On testing day, please show up to the testing site at your scheduled time. At this time, all testing takes place at either Matthew Knight Arena or McArthur Court. The testing location will be posted alongside each date. Please enter via the western entrance.

The testing process itself will require minimal time. While there may be some waiting time, lines are expected to move quickly and you should only need 15-30 minutes to complete the process from start to finish.

Before entering the building there is a station where you will be asked to blow your nose. This helps clear out excess material from your nose and will improve the accuracy of the test. Tissues, a wastebasket for disposal and hand sanitizer will be provided.

After you enter the building, you will go to the testing check-in table. Testing personnel will verify your name and other information about you, such as your 95-number if you are affiliated with the University of Oregon or your date of birth. Testing personnel will also prep your sample collection tube, which you will be asked to take with you to the sample collection station.

The sample collection personnel will give you a collection swab and ask you to collect your sample following this process:

  1. Insert swab pointing toward the back of your nostril.
  2. Press gently against the back of your nostril and rotate the swab once by spinning between your thumb and forefinger.
  3. Leave the swab in place for 10 seconds.
  4. Repeat in the other nostril using the same swab.

When you have completed the collection, give the swab back to the sample collection personnel. If there is any visible mucus, snot, or clotted blood on the swab you’ll be asked to repeat the process. Excess material on the swab can interfere with the lab test and it is common to be asked to recollect a sample.

You are then finished with the sample collection. You will receive your results within four days by 9:00 p.m.
